Trailblazer Field Trip to Pioneer
The Trailblazer field trip is the culmination of the Trailblazer experience and the highlight of the year for many Pioneer seniors and their elementary mentees. The seniors get a chance to model the positive relationships that they have made with their teachers and show their elementary mentees that high school success is attainable for all.
The mentees tour Pioneer and engage in activities created by teachers and Pioneer underclassmen such as mousetrap race cars, chemistry experiments, story telling, math problems and more. The mentees end their time at Pioneer with a snack in the cafeteria and head back to school.
The Trailblazer is a powerful and emotional end to a year filled with growth and development for both Pioneer seniors and their elementary mentees.

Mentors that are walking with their kids must be at the elementary school by 11:50 so that they can walk with their kids to Pioneer.
Mentees that ride the bus are scheduled to arrive around 12:15-12:30 at the library loop bus area off 7th street. Be patient and flexible as you wait for your mentee. Draw a welcome message in chalk as you wait!
Once your mentee arrives at Pioneer, you must:
• Remain with your mentee at all times.
• Protect him/her during passing time. Step into a classroom or quiet area.
• Stay IN the building.
• Accompany him/her to the bathroom (if different gender, find another Trailblazer to help)
While at Pioneer, you and your mentee should:
#1 Stop by activity stations throughout the building:
You will have bookmarks for the kids to collect signatures as they go to each station which will include locations for activities.
#2 Make sure you stop by the clock tower area so that you can get a picture of you and your mentee. You will use this to make your end of the year card..
#3 Visit one or more of your classrooms to introduce her/him to at least one teacher and show him/her what a high school classroom looks like.
#4 Tour the building. Make sure you stop at the gym, book depository, office, library and pool.
#5 End up at the cafeteria for refreshments at 1:30pm. We will have water, baked goods and pizza. Remember, kids eat first.
Mentees Leave at 2:00 sharp. Be to the Media Center entrance by 1:50 for a group picture. If it’s raining, we will skip the picture!
Have Fun!
Special notes: If your mentee gets scared or uneasy or misbehaves: Mr. Packard, Mr. Stern, and/or the elem. teachers will always be in the cafeteria if you need one of us for any reason. One child felt a little sick last year. They ended up just hanging out in the refreshment area until it was time to head back. I believe the mentee felt a little overwhelmed. It is comforting for the younger students to go around in a group. If you split up to go to classes you might make plans to meet up again with the other mentors and mentees from the same grade for your tour. Be firm and do not allow any children to run in the building or otherwise get wild. If your mentee is not behaving, please bring him or her right to the cafeteria

Notes to Site Supervisors:
The high school kids are excited to host you and your students. Here are some additional details.
Lawton, Bach and Eberwhite will be walking this year. Please use the 7th street entrance and plan to arrive at 12:30. I will release the Pioneer Trailblazers at 11:40 and ask them to be at your building NO LATER than 11:50 to escort you and their mentee to Pioneer. If you want them there earlier or later, just let me/them know.
Pattengill and Dicken will come by bus (each school has their own). Buses are scheduled to be at your school at 12:10 with arrival at Pioneer at 12:30. Again, please use the 7th street entrance by the library.
Once at Pioneer, mentors will take their mentees throughout the school and visit activity stations set up by Pioneer teachers and students. Chaperones can come to cafeteria to help get snacks ready and to relax. All Trailblazers have been instructed to come to the cafeteria if they run into an issue or need something, so it's helpful if chaperones are there.
Sometime during the time here ALL mentors/mentees should have their picture taken outside the clock tower entrance. We will print those pictures and use them for the end of the year cards that Pioneer students will give to their elem. mentees on their last day. I've also printed cards that I'll give to you tomorrow for the mentee to write a card back to the Pioneer students.
At 1:30 we will meet in the cafeteria for pizza, cookies and water. At 1:50 we will head to the Media Center entrance for a quick group picture and then get on the bus (Pattengill and Dicken) or begin walking back to school with mentors accompanying.
This information and more can be found at MrPackard.com under the Trailblazers tab.
