• Responding to trauma via art - We will look at some paintings and write about each one.
• A Holocaust Art Exhibit - Choose "The Sowers," "Unable to Work," and "Gassing." Write at least a paragraph describing what you see in the painting.
• Additional picture from the Cambodian artist Vann Nath about waterboarding. Write at least a paragraph describing what you see in the painting.
Homework:
• For each painting, add a second paragraph that describes the purpose of each painting and how each one makes you feel. Why do you think the artist created each painting?

• Pass out character chart – students can use this on quizzes!

• Show video Letters from Siberia Part I as introduction to this unit!

• Read Thieves and Prostitutes chapters 1-4 in Between Shades of Gray

• Discuss Between Shades of Gray chapters 1-4. Look at how Sepetys uses flashbacks to fill in details about the family before the June 14th event.
Read flashback on page 9 and discuss the information provided. Why does Sepetys do it this way?
